Side by Side / KIKA ver. - With Time -

Together with Owada Zuika and Kumagai Tetsuya, we form the design unit KIKA.

Under the theme “With Time”, each of us created a product that embodies the idea of beauty emerging through the passage of time, and we exhibited our works during Dutch Design Week.

Continuing from the theme “Side by Side,” I used weathering steel, a material that becomes stronger as it rusts, and allowed it to develop natural rust during Japan’s rainy season. The resulting rust patterns vary completely depending on the intensity of the rain, direction of the wind, and placement of the vase.

After the rusting process, some pieces were coated to stop the rust and freeze time, while others were left uncoated to allow the rust to continue evolving, representing time in motion.

These two finishing methods express contrasting relationships with time.

The spatial composition, logo design, and tote bags were all created together with the three of us and with the support of many great people.
